Auto-Pan

Space category, section-level.

Moves the sound between the left and right speakers on its own, driven by an LFO.

Controls

Rate. How fast the sound travels from side to side. Turned down it drifts slowly, turned up it flickers.

Depth. How far it travels. Turned down the sound stays near the centre and only sways. Turned up it swings hard from one speaker to the other.

The two combine into the character of the motion. Slow and deep is a lazy, hypnotic drift. Fast and deep pulses like a tremolo and adds rhythmic energy. Fast and shallow is a stereo shimmer you notice without being able to point at.

Gentle Sway, Fast Tremolo, Wide Sweep.

When to use it

Hi-hats, keys and synth textures. Anything that can afford to move without the listener losing track of where it is. Leave lead vocals, bass and kick alone.
